Mission will form an integral part of the Horizon Europe research programme beginning in 2021. These research and innovation missions will increase the effectiveness of funding by pursuing clearly defined targets.
Five mission areas have been identified with a mandate to solve pressing challenges in society within a certain timeframe and budget. The Missions are bold and inspirational and are designed to drive a systemic change and transformation.
Each Mission area have been developed with input from a large number of high-level experts that form an assemble with public engagement with stakeholders and citizens.
The assembly that gathers a large number of high-level experts that provide an additional pool of ideas, knowledge and expertise that will be actively called upon to contribute to the success of the missions.

Conquering Cancer: Mission Possible
The Cancer mission aims to save more than 3 million lives, with people living longer and better, achieve a thorough understanding of cancer, prevent what is preventable, optimise diagnosis and treatment, support the quality of life of all people exposed to cancer, and ensure equitable access to treatment the above across Europe. The targets is set to be achieved 2030.
A Climate Resilient Europe – Prepare Europe for climate disruptions and accelerate the transformation to a climate resilient and just Europe by 2030
This mission is focused on preparing Europe to deal with climate disruptions, accelerate the transition to a healthy and prosperous future within safe planetary boundaries and scale up solutions for resilience that will trigger transformations in society. The targets is set to be achieved 2030.
Mission Starfish 2030: Restore our Ocean and Waters
This mission is focused on healthy oceans, seas, coastal and inland waters. It will involve cleaning marine and fresh waters, restoring degraded ecosystems and habitats, decarbonising the blue economy in order to sustainably harness the essential goods and services they provide. The targets is set to be achieved 2030.
100 Climate-Neutral Cities by 2030 – by and for the citizens
This mission will focus on achieving climate neutrality and the development of smart cities. The mission will support, promote and showcase 100 European cities in their systemic transformation towards climate neutrality by 2030 and turn these cities into innovation hubs for all cities, benefiting quality of life and sustainability in Europe. The targets is set to be achieved 2030.
Caring for Soil is Caring for Life
This mission focuses on soil health and food. The aim is to have at least 75% of all soils in the EU healthy for food, people, nature and climate. The proposed mission combines research and innovation, education and training, investments and the demonstration of good practices using “Living labs” (experiments and innovation in a laboratory on the ground) and “Lighthouses” (places to showcase good practices). The targets is set to be achieved 2030.
