Edge AI focuses on implementing AI in an edge computing environment, allowing computations to be done close to where data is collected rather than at a centralised cloud computing facility or an offsite data centre. It is a key feature in many of the small devices that are found in homes, offices, factories and workspaces. Advancing this technology is the aim of NeuroSoC, a Horizon Europe funded project that includes 12 partners from 9 countries across Europe, including the UK and Switzerland.

But the latest United Nations study found that a third of the world’s population remains unconnected to the World Wide Web, with those in poor and remote areas most affected. 5G-STARDUST, or Satellite and Terrestrial Access for Distributed, Ubiquitous, and Smart Telecommunications, is a Horizon Europe-funded project that may help to tackle the digital divide.

As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes ever more embedded in business and society, the EU has declared the need for a ‘human-centric’ approach to AI. TU Dublin has teamed up with 13 partners from across Europe to create ‘CISC’ (Collaborative Intelligence for Safety Critical systems), a MSCA Innovative Training Network project. Funded by Horizon 2020, the project aims to hire, train and mentor early-stage researchers as collaborative intelligence (CI) scientists.
